Walking to Fira

We take a lot of boats from island to island, but every once in a while we survey islands that are within walking distance across narrow channels. Here’s one, Fira, which is just off the coast of Antiparos, which is itself an island off of Paros – one of the big islands in the cyclades. … More Walking to Fira

Solar Drying Oven

No matter the question, if you’re working on terrestrial community ecology, eventually you have to clip mountains of vegetation to dry and weigh. In the states that’s a relatively straightforward process of sticking vegetation in massive drying ovens until all the water is removed and you can get comparable dry weights. Here, the task is … More Solar Drying Oven

Insects

A few more insect pictures from the field for your enjoyment. It’s nice every once in a while to shift my gaze from the lizards and take a look at who else is in the system.

Popping peas

I really wish I had had my video camera for this. I was out in the field the other day, surveying lizards on a terrace, with the sun blazing overhead. As I walked through a field in front of one of my terraces I heard a popping sound – just like popping popcorn. I thought … More Popping peas

Crazy Caterpillar

In case some of you are getting tired of all of the lizard pics, here’s a crazy caterpillar I found the other day! It was as long and fat as my finger! A pretty awesome specimen. I’d have loved to take it home to raise and see what it turns into. Alas though, I decided … More Crazy Caterpillar

Night shots

Two tails!

What’s wrong with this picture? I caught this lizard the other day and was quite surprised to see it had two tails. No, this isn’t a case of toxins in the water. One of the tails, the lower one in the picture I believe, was partially autotomized and the second regenerated despite the fact that … More Two tails!

Updates!

Sorry to be so remiss of late on the blog. I limped to the end of May with a bad case of food poisoning that knocked me out for a couple of days. After that, June hit, and with it the realization that my field days are extremely numbered and I still have a ton … More Updates!

Amorgos Sunset

And, just a quick picture of the port on Amorgos. I went hiking in search of lizards as the sun went down after the long day of island hopping. Not many lizards on that trip, but a great view of the island.
